Hi Brad, my son who is now 25 years old was born with a cataract on his left eye, we only really saw it when he was about one month old and nobody else seemed to notice it. We took him to our house doctor who also could not see it but my husband and i insisted that there was something on the eye. We then insisted that we see an ophthalmologist and after doing a lot of tests he told us that it was a cataract. At the age of 4 months he went in to surgery to have the cataract removed, once the eye had healed they decided to try a contact lens, and as i am sure you are aware of,it was hell trying to keep this lens in the eye as if he was not rubbing it out he would cry it out and to try and find it was always a problem but more importantly it was very frustrating. After long discussions it was decided that it was not going to be worth the effort as there was no garrantee that his sight would improve as he had very little vision in the eye. Over the next few years he had corrective surgery to correct the squint that had developed and the vision itself never improved. The right eye has compensated for the loss in the left eye and although he struggled with ball sports he has never had to have glasses. I know your son has it in both eyes and we can only pray that in this day and age and all the new technology the doctors will be able to improve your sons sight. May you and your family be blessed as you travel this road together. Regards, Dawn Zimmerman.

Hi,

Do you have any suggestions for discussion groups or more resources for handling infant cateracts in terms of decision making? This is a wonderful forum- but I am wondering if you've run across other areas for parents to share thoughts and paths?

Thank You.
